DAILY GRIST 17 Sep 2001 Environmental news from GRIST MAGAZINE <http://www.gristmagazine.com> DEAR GRIST READERS: The following web page contains links to emergency information about last week's tragedy and current relief efforts -- <http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/US/Emergency_Information/> 1. TOAST OF THE TOWN In the wake of last week's tragedy, some green leaders in the U.S. are concerned that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge may be toast. If oil prices spike and bombs begin to rain on the Arab world, the thinking goes that enviros and aligned politicians won't be able to resist a riptide of public sentiment in favor of jamming a drill into any piece of land capable of spitting out a drop of oil. A rumor spread in Washington, D.C., on Friday that Alaska Sen. Frank Murkowski (R) was preparing to attach language to open the refuge onto every bill that reached the Senate floor. Meanwhile, Alaska Rep. Don Young (R) went so far last week as to suggest that "eco-terrorists" might have planned the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. PAMPAS AND CIRCUMSTANCES More than 1,500 farmers now plant 7 million acres of organic crops a year in Argentina, up from 220 farmers and 13,000 acres in 1995. For the most part, people in Argentina haven't developed a taste for the stuff -- 90 percent of the country's organic crops are exported, mostly to the U.S. and Europe. The leading organic crops include soybeans, corn, fruits, rice, sugar, and tobacco. Jose Nanni, who converted his family's 100-year-old vineyard to organic production a few years ago, said, "We don't need to use any type of chemicals because of the characteristics of the area where we grow our grapes." straight to the source: Planet Ark, Reuters, Athena Jones, 17 Sep 2001 <http://www.planetark.org/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/12418/story.htm> 3. HARD OF HURON Michigan natural resources officials voted on Friday to lift a four-year moratorium on oil and gas drilling beneath Lakes Huron and Michigan. Supporters said the lake-bottom deposits would boost energy supplies in the U.S. while bringing the state royalty money that could be used to purchase public land. Critics said the risks of the drilling were too great, even though it would be prohibited in "environmentally sensitive" areas. Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm (D), a candidate for governor next fall, hasn't ruled out suing the state Department of Natural Resources to block the drilling. Other top state politicians, such as Lieutenant Gov. Dick Posthumus (R), who is also running for governor, and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D), oppose the drilling. The DNR said it would take about a year to approve the first drilling permits. straight to the source: Detroit Free Press, Dawson Bell, 15 Sep 2001 <http://www.freep.com/news/mich/drill15_20010915.htm> straight to the source: Detroit News, Jeremy Pearce, 14 Sep 2001 <http://www.detnews.com/2001/metro/0109/14/d01-294260.htm> read it only in Grist Magazine: Lake mess again -- a plan to drill under the Great Lakes is fracturing the Michigan Republican Party -- by Keith Schneider <http://www.gristmagazine.com/grist/maindish/schneider062901.asp?source=daily> 4. TELL A COMMUTER Once touted as a solution to traffic congestion problems in the U.S., telecommuting has largely been a no-show. A decade ago, the federal government predicted that as much as 10.4 percent of the population would be telecommuting several days a week by 2000. But telecommuting hasn't even topped 1 percent in some of the country's most congested areas. For example, take heavily trafficked King County, Wash., where only 0.6 percent of workers telecommute more than two days a week. Even Liz Rankin, former head of Seattle's efforts to reduce commuter congestion and now the city's transportation communications chief, found telecommuting unworkable in her current job. Many workers and supervisors say telecommuting has proven difficult because it rules out spontaneous face-to-face meetings and other forms of daily contact with colleagues. straight to the source: Seattle Times, Andrew Garber, 17 Sep 2001 <http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/134342595_telecommute17m.html> do good: Take action to get U.S. transportation policy back on track <http://www.gristmagazine.com/grist/dogood/autos.asp?source=daily#congestion> 5. MAPLE LEAF RAG New England could lose many of its trademark sugar maples, and the region's cross-country skiing and snowmobile industries could take a big hit, if steps aren't taken soon to fend off climate change, according to a new study produced by the U.S. EPA, environmental groups, and others. If no steps are taken, Boston's climate by 2100 could be the same as the current climate of Atlanta, the study said. straight to the source: Nashua Telegraph, David Brooks, 17 Sep 2001 <http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/Main.asp?SectionID=25&SubSectionID=354 &ArticleID=40443> ----------------------------------------------------------------- Also in GRIST MAGAZINE today: Spin the bottle -- Perrier didn't reckon on an angry citizenry when it looked to expand into the Midwest -- in our Main Dish section <http://www.gristmagazine.com/grist/maindish/ness052101.stm?source=daily> Between a red rock and a hard place -- a day in the life of Dan Kent, Red Rock Forests <http://www.gristmagazine.com/grist/week/kent091401.asp?source=daily> Neighborhood watch -- the people next door can help you think green -- in our Global Citizen section <http://www.gristmagazine.com/grist/citizen/citizen090601.asp?source=daily> ----------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe to DAILY GRIST, click here <http://www.gristmagazine.com/grist/signup/subgrist.asp?source=daily> or send a blank email message to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
