India Hijacking Was False Alarm
Ground Controller Received Anonymous Threat

NEW DELHI, India -- India's government said that the reported hijacking of a
flight from Bombay to New Delhi was a false alarm caused by an anonymous phone call
and confusion in the cockpit and cabin.
All passengers were allowed to leave the plane early Wednesday evening.
India's Minister of Civil Aviation said that a ground controller received an
anonymous call saying that the plane had been hijacked and relayed the information to
the plane's pilot, Satinder Bindra of CNN reported.
The pilot sealed the cockpit door after being told about the call, assuming the
hijackers were among the passengers.
The minister said that most of the 54 passengers and crew weren't even aware
that there had been a hijacking report. They thought it was a mechanical problem.
The plane was an Indian jetliner, a Boeing 737.
According to a private TV (Star News) station, the plane was directed to an
isolated area of Indira Gandhi International Airport, and it was surrounded by police
and commandos. Earlier reports that hijackers asked for engineers to come onboard
apparently were inaccurate.
An Indian official told the private Star News television network that the pilots
had sealed the cockpit doors, with the presumed hijackers unable to get inside.
Pakistani airports were told not to let the plane land there. All of the nation's
airports were put on high alert and troops were sent to Islamabad's airport.
The plane belongs to a domestic subsidiary of Indian Airlines.
MSNBC reported that there was no reason to suspect that the hijacking had
anything to do with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. India has been on alert since
those attacks.
