Incarcerated Juveniles - Do they have access to traditional ceremonies?
By Ruth Steinberger-Part of a series originally published in the Lakota
Journal.
Used with Permission <http://www.lakotajournal.com/>
While freedom of religion is federally protected under the Bill of Rights,
and for Native Americans these rights were secured through the passage of the
American Indian Religious Freedom Act in 1978, a recent survey revealed that
for incarcerated Native American youth, this right may be treated as a
privilege, or may be unavailable altogether. The 1993 revision of this Act
included religious rights for prisoners.

Big Purse, Big Problems; Little Purse, Big Problems
by Dorreen Yellow Bird <http://web.northscape.com/>
I have come to believe that as our bodies shrink with age, our purses grow in
size. Both are symptoms of getting older. I used to carry this big 20-pound,
brown leather purse that I'd bought on sale at Wilson Leather until its
weight lowered the right side of my body a couple of inches and injured my
knee. This week, I gave up that "carry all" purse.

The Danger of Meningitis
by Kasey Weaver
Each year, around the world, approximately 135,000 people die from bacterial
meningitis. Here, in the United States, exact numbers are not known. In 1994,
the Center for Disease Control (CDC) published figures of 12,992 cases,
reported to them, 10% of which were fatal. However, these numbers are far
from precise, as individual states are not required to advise the CDC of
meningitis cases. Although large outbreaks in the United States are uncommon,
worldwide meningitis has caused epidemics. Of the 1.2 million cases of
bacterial meningitis, approximately 500,000 of these cases were due to the
meningococcus meningitis--the only form of bacterial meningitis that causes
epidemics. While meningitis can occur at any time, most occurrences of
bacterial meningitis occur in the winter months (November-March) and viral
meningitis in the summer.

Hey! There’s Asbestos in my Soup
This Issue’s Enviro-rantings From an All Natural Soapbox
By Jamie Lockard
I work in construction. I know, I know…boo hiss right? Well, I don’t run the
bulldozer, so the hostility is mis-directed. Actually, one of our projects is
developing mass alternative energy sources…so there. Anyway, I bring this up
not to attract negative attention toward myself, but to give you the inside
scoop on what is about to happen with the industry.

Craft Series - Weaving- Part One
by Lynne Sageflower Pennington
There are several ways to weave from using a loom to weaving with your
fingers. Today with computerized looms some of the ways of weaving are a lost
art, yet some are still carried on from generation to generation.
