This is a poem by Giuseppe Ungaretti, one of the highest italian writers
of the 20th century; the following poem refers to the bitter, painful
experience of the author during the WWI, but can be read from an actual
point of view after Spt. 11th; the title, S. Martino del Carso (in the
Alps: Italians and Austrians fought for many years in that area), is a
real part of the lyric. Translating such a text has been very difficult
and in some points I rendered the sense of the original.

Stefano

San Martino del Carso

Of these houses
only remained
some pieces
of wall

Of so many
very friends
neither so little pieces
remained

But in the heart
no cross is missing

It's my heart
the most racked place.

        Giuseppe Ungaretti
