Native Americans will defend U.S.
by KIM CHIEVRUE
The Times Online
If this country goes to war, among the forces will be our original citizens:
the Native Americans.

"Indian blood has been shed in every war since the Revolution," said Gerry
Hill, past president of the American Indian Bar Association. Hill addressed a
small but rapt crowd Saturday at Valparaiso University. His lecture was part
of the Native American Festival, which included food and entertainment.
"After having our land stolen, we still went to war," Hill said. "We were
able to put aside disputes over treaties, because we're still Americans."

Lest We Forget
by Jamie Lockard
Tuesday, September 11, 2001, was an absolutely unbelievable day. I am still
not sure that emotionally I have completely accepted the fact that it
happened. I am confident that the US Government and the UN Security Council
will handle the matter accordingly. In the meantime I think that the best
thing we can do is have faith in our government, watch and wait and conduct
ourselves as Americans. The whole world is watching.

Genocide and Native Americans
by Raven Weaver
"... every redskin must be killed from off the face of the plains before we
can be free from molestation's. They are of no earthly good and the sooner
they are swept from the land the better for civilization" - 1866

I began this research by looking up in the dictionary, and in the
encyclopedia for the meaning of the word Genocide. This is what I came up
with.

In International Law, the intentional and systematic destruction, wholly or
in part, by a government of a national, racial, religious, or ethnic group.

The Danger of Chemical and Biological Weapons
by Kasey Weaver
Sadly, one of the universal traits of human beings is our ability to kill and
destroy. Over the centuries we have seen some of the greatest developments of
technology and advancement in science due to war or a desire to have a more
crippling weapon. Weapons have become bigger, faster and deadlier. Yet the
most devastating of all weapons might come in the smallest of packages. The
use of chemical or biological agents as a weapon of war has become the
critical focus of many. The smallest amounts delivered by the most obscure
methods could ravage thousands, even millions of people, animal and plants.

You Have Diabetes....Now What?

"Pima Indians: A Case Study"
by Greg Morago
The Hartfort Courant"It's in the blood. The blood of ancestors that carries a
time bomb. The blood of my mother, both my grandmothers, my sister and dozens
of relatives bound by an inherited disease.

It's in my blood, too - a genetic predisposition to obesity, which is a major
risk factor for diabetes. Diabetes has marked generations of my family and my
tribe, the Pima Indians of southern Arizona. We Pimas - cruelly targeted by a
genetic quirk that has caused us to have the highest rate of diabetes in the
world - have long lived with the kidney disease, blindness and amputations
that attend diabetes. And, of course, the death.

Over the next several months I will be starting articles about Dance
Regalia-Plains and Woodland Styles. These articles will include Accessories
and the Main clothing. However, before I start these articles I want to go
over some of the ways to decorate regalia. I have already gone over beading
in past issues. In this issue I will go over quillwork. There will be 2
sections to the Art of Quillwork:

The Stoic Indian

In each issue, you will find a funny story here. Perhaps, even a true story
or one with a moral.
