The nominees in October's Native American Stereotype of the Month contest are: * "Herman" blames Indians on "warpath" for wounded Anglo * Judge: TX tribes are "associations" equivalent to sororities * Tongva: "If Indians come...there goes the neighborhood" * Wigwam Motel offers teepees (not wigwams) on Hopi Rd. * "Herman" mixes Plains Indian, Apache, archery contest * Anti-Indian groups believe treaties, sovereignty are invalid * Gossip columnist Liz Smith says Tecumseh was a terrorist * Native construction workers called "wagon burner," "chief" * "Dennis the Menace" shows Eskimo child with parka, igloo * Fighting Sioux t-shirt shows Indian having sex with buffalo * Powwow vendor sells tomahawks, tom-toms, princess dolls Dishonorable mention goes to the Texas judge who ruled the Tiguas are an association like a sorority or a fraternity, not a tribe. I didn't know state judges were involved in the federal recognition process. The loser is all those anti-Indian groups, especially in Washington state, who keep declaring that Native nations aren't sovereign and Native treaties aren't valid. These fanatics can declare income taxes invalid too, but that won't keep them from a nice jail cell for ignoring the Constitution. A special mention goes to Liz Smith for her post-9/11 column calling Tecumseh a terrorist. Because she's only one person, and I don't think her words made it into the papers, I didn't give her an official designation. But it was a tough call.
