In Norton We Trust????
by Vicki Lockard
I have included the text of these speeches because I, like many in Indian
country find it amazing that these people stood before the National Congress
of American Indians and actually said these things. Who are they trying to
kid? Let's go back and look at what has been happening with the "Trust Fund"
monies. The fund manages royalties from mining, grazing, timber harvesting
and other activities on 54 million acres of Indian land held in trust by the
Interior Department since 1887. Payments were supposed to be made to the
individual Indian beneficiaries, but much of the money was lost,
misappropriated, stolen or never collected.

Marion's
by John Rustywire
In every community I suppose there is a place like Marion's. It is downtown,
on mainstreet I guess you could call it in a small town with just a few
streets that crisscross each other. The front of the place is painted white,
the only place with a porch painted white with victorian turn of the century
gingerbread pattern cutouts decorating the outside. The four posts that hold
up the porch used to be where horses and buggies were tied up along time ago.
There is a single door and inside there are treasures.

I Care. Do You?
by Kasey Weaver
I care. Do you? This was the theme for World AIDS Day held on December 1,
2001. Since 1988, the first day in December has been set aside
internationally as a day to bring a message of hope, unity, tolerance and
compassion throughout the world. Each year it is a day set-aside for a
coordinated effort by the entire world against AIDS.

On Sovereignty and Citizenship
By Carter Camp
Our lands, natural resources and governance are controlled by quasi-sovereign
entities that have evolved from the U.S. Supreme Courts' continuing
interpretation of the Treaties between our Governments and the American
Constitutions' few words regarding Native Nations. In modern times many laws
passed by Congress and the various Presidential decrees and "Indian Policies"
have modified these rulings. Over the years these "Tribal Governments" have
taken their nebulous place alongside the other sovereignties which make up
the United States, its' Territories and Possessions. However our place as
citizens of America has never been truly defined. Ex-President Ronald Reagan
declared that our Tribal governments possessed sovereignty "equal to the
States in their jurisdictions" while the reality is something much less. Some
of our own people claim we still posses complete political independence,
which sounds good in principle but fails in practice. But if our governments
and our people are to truly become active participants in America and full
American citizens we need to solve some basic problems and answer some basic
questions about our place in America.

Enviro-rantings From An All Natural Soapbox
By Jamie Lockard
I scour the papers each and every day searching for environmental injustices
of the earth. It doesn’t usually take me long. In fact, the hardest job I
have is decided who is the most evil of the week. It would much simpler if I
had a sidekick to send up some kind of signal. The Recycle-Signal. “ Quick…
to the environ-mobile!!! Must…fight…toxic waste! Come Leafboy let us be off
to conquer the evil Dr. PCB!” It would be easy because my uniform would be
earth tones and camouflage. The bad guys would never see me coming. I’d love
to see the look of the US Congress-person’s faces when I showed up in that
get-up. Every once in awhile, a great while, I come across a case of the
good guys winning. It seems to me too often that the EPA or some other
government watchdog gets to bark really, really loudly, but they never get to
sink their teeth into the bad guys. Well, not this time.
