Subj: Fwd: Urgent!!!!!!! More On Black Creek Date: 12/11/2001 3:22:21 PM Eastern Standard Time From: RosselloP BCC: FM 6115 ----------------- Forwarded Message: Subj: Urgent!!!!!!! Date: 12/11/2001 11:51:29 AM Eastern Standard Time From: RosselloP To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To all concerned about historic sites: Once again, the state legislature will meet this Thursday and consider a bill that would be detrimental to historic sites in New Jersey. As you may know, our own Senator Robert Littell (R-24) is working in tandem with the Vernon Township Council in an attempt to destroy the Black Creek prehistoric site, which the State Review Board of the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office now has determined to be historically significant and has recommended that the site be listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Senator Littell has vowed to tamper with the review board's recommendation and will try to influence the commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection to NOT list the site on the registers. Additionally, Senator Littell is now a co-sponsor of the bill that will be heard by the Assembly this Thursday. This bill, if adopted, could have a tremendous impact on cultural resource management. Please read the following and. if you are willing to support it, contact your legislators by e-mail or by phone and let them know how you feel. The more voices that are heard, the more the legislators will get the message. I have attached a letter that was written by the executive director of Preservation New Jersey that explains the bill. Below her letter, I have included the names, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses for the legislators who will decide on the bill on Thursday, Please take a moment to read it and take action accordingly. Jessica Paladini ------------------------------------------------ Proposed Amendment will Gut New Jersey's Register of Historic Places Act Once again, we need everyone to turn out in opposition to Assembly Bill 2580/(S1399), introduced in June, 2000, as an amendment to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places Law, (NJ Laws of 1970, chapter 268,) which is being heard by the Assembly Environment Committee on Thursday, December 13,2001. Call, fax, e-mail or show up! When: Thursday, December 13, 2001 Where: Committee Room 9 State House Annex, Trenton Time: 2 pm The N.J. Register of Historic Places law was enacted in 1970 to protect historic areas, sites, structures or objects from inappropriate government undertakings. This proposed amendment would prohibit the listing of municipally or county owned properties without the consent of the governing body. The fate of our communities' heritage should be left in the hands of the people! Join us! For more information call Pat Huizing, Executive Director, Preservation New Jersey at 609-392-6409. One of the strength's of New Jersey's Register of Historic Places Law is that it is non-political and non-partisan. After extensive public input, a property is placed on the NJ register based solely on its historic and architectural merits. There is an excellent and extensive review process by recognized professionals. This proposed bill would radically restructure this process. Important historic resources could be denied the protection and benefits of the NJ Register if a local government decided that it was inconvenient. Developers could sway the process through extensive lobbying, short-circuiting the registration process for their own purposes. The New Jersey Register of Historic Places provides minimal protection as it is. The law should be strengthened, not politicized. Please vote NO on Assembly Bill 2580.
