Urgent - Need letters to help Save BLack Creek - Please write
Black Creek was granted Historic Register in the state of New Jersey after a
long struggle. Unami Lands were thought to be safe now! Instead the law
listed below was written and presented to New Jersey legislature. This law
would allow townships to super cede the historic status if they do not agree
in writing with the state' s decision. In this case, if the governor signs
this legislation into law Black Creek would again be open for development.
Please write the governor or use the letter below to inform the governor that
this law needs to be stopped and Black Creek should remain protected as is
provided under the State Historic Register it has received.
Thankyou for taking the time to write, I know time is a precious
gift in today's world. Black Creek is a precious gift also that can never be
replaced once lost.

URGENT! Please act NOW!

From: JessicaPaladini
PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO EVERY PERSON AND EVERY ORGANIZATION YOU KNOW
IMMEDIATELY. I CANNOT IMPRESS UPON YOU THE URGENCY OF THIS NEED. THE
LEGISLATION IS ON THE ACTING GOVERNOR'S DESK NOW FOR SIGNING!
Our worst fears were realized last night at 11:10 pm when the Assembly
passed A2580/S1399 by a vote of 44 to 29 with 2 absentions. The Senate
version passed earlier in the evening by a vote of 25 to 11.
The measure now has seven (7) days by which either acting governor can sign
the bill into law or it dies. During this transition Senate co-presidents
Codey and Bennett serve as acting governors.
PLEASE WRITE/FAX/EMAIL like mad.....(see sample below - put in your own
words if possible) This is our last hope that this very ill conceived bill
will be stopped.
Thanks to all who turned out yesterday and for all you have done to help so
far.

Dear ____________,
I am writing to ask that you DO NOT sign A2580/S1399, the proposed amendment
to the NJ Register of Historic Places Act. The NJ Register Act was passed in
1970 to protect the public and future residents of the state of New Jersey
from loosing their heritage - both architectural and archaeological. The
law created a checks and balance system to oversee public undertakings. The
law provides protection from public undertakings but does not regulate
private property.
This proposed bill would radically restructure this process. Important
historic resources could be denied the protection and benefits of the NJ
Register if a local government decided that it was inconvenient. This bill
would pit municipalities who want sites in their communities protected
against counties who own those sites (i.e. bridges), and want to demolish
them for their own projects. Developers could sway the process through
extensive lobbying, short-circuiting the registration process for their own
purposes.
If this amendment is enacted, it means we will have a register of historic
property that is one of convenience and not one that is reflective of the
diversity and uniqueness of New Jersey's past.
Public officials are STEWARDS, not owners, of publicly owned historic
property. Please do NOT sign A2580/S1399.
