Lang, a member of the Karuk tribe, said she'll be the first American Indian woman to compete in the Winter Olympics. "I'm so proud," she said Saturday after she and Peter Tchernyshev won their fourth ice dance title at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. "I can't even describe the feelings I have to be the first Native American. I hope everyone's proud of me." Lang is Karuk on her father's side. She said she is a tribal member and her heritage has been an important part of her life since she was a girl. "Ever since I was born I can remember going to native things, going to powwows and dances and absorbing the Indian culture and dancing around the crowds," she said. "We had a show for a club of Native Americans in 1997. They actually did a dance in the middle of the rink for us." The Karuks are based in northern California, and Lang said she frequently visits American Indian relatives who live in Eureka, Calif. She also keeps in touch with members of her tribe through e-mail. "They always tell me that they're proud of me, and it means a lot to know I've had a positive influence on them," she said.
