Dear friends,
It is with great pleasure that I tell you that finally ALL of the Black Creek Site is listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and was forwarded for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
It is not necessary for anyone to attend the SHPO hearing in Trenton tomorrow since the site was already listed Monday afternoon by the commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection. Let me explain what happened.
As you know, there was a hearing scheduled in Trenton for the State Review Board to consider the remaining acreage of the Black Creek Site. Three weeks ago, the Vernon Township Council came up with a new trick to circumvent the DEP process, and it advertised for bid proposals for construction of two football fields on top of the Black Creek Site's south field, which was being considered tomorrow. The intent of the town was to create a contract for construction, the only thing that can stop the state from listing a site on the register. Last night, the township council held a special meeting and awarded a contract for the construction of the fields.
However, the commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection was told of the township's intent AND HE LISTED THE REMAINDER OF THE SITE WITHOUT THE BENEFIT OF THE HEARING TOMORROW! He listed the site yesterday afternoon, before the town council met to award the contract. Now, the town's contract is null and void. That also means the entire Black Creek Site is now preserved and on the State Register of Historic Places.
We should all write a short letter to the DEP commissioner, thanking him for what he has done for the preservation of the site. Let's thank him for having the integrity and fortitude to stand up to the township council and do what is right. Let's bombard him with e-mail messages of praise and thanks for what he has done!

Thank you all for your continued support. A more detailed message will follow tomorrow to keep you abreast of everything that happens.
