Many Voices - Native American Ezine
Announcment From The bi-monthly ezine "We Have Many Voices" We have updated our website where we bring you the news behind the news. A brief description of each article is listed below, and you may read them in their entirety at our web page: We Have Many Voices Ezine http://www.turtletrack.org/ManyVoices/ ---------------------------------------------------- Tribal Leaders Look to Restore Health by JAMES HAGENGRUBER of the Billings Gazette When French trappers first spotted Crow warriors two centuries ago, they called them the "beautiful men." They were tall, lean and had skin that glowed with health. If the trappers traveled through Montana today, they probably would have different words to describe the indigenous people, said Manuella Mesteth, director of the Crow Tribe's Health Department. "It was a culture of total well-being," Mesteth said of her ancestors' health. "It was not a culture of poverty and disease." ----------------------------------------------------
Elk-teeth dress is epitome of Crow status and style by JAMES HAGENGRUBER of The Gazette Staff LODGE GRASS - Before the invasion of silk, sequins and designer labels, the highest fashion west of the Mississippi was the elk-teeth dress. There was no mistaking the status of a Crow woman wearing her tribe's signature gown of blue or indigo trade wool covered by 500 elk canine teeth. They wore their wealth on their sleeves. Because only two teeth from an elk are suitable, each dress represented years of hunting and hard work. ---------------------------------------------------- Rosebud vs. SDDSS By Ruth Steinberger, Lakota Journal A class action lawsuit has been filed in Rosebud Sioux Tribal Court against the South Dakota Department of Social Services, and Director Scott Dutt and named caseworker Lisa Havemann, seeking relief that would prohibit the South Dakota Department of Social Services (SDDSS) from continuing to use Temporary Emergency Custody orders to take temporary legal custody of Indian children when there is no emergency. The emergency order allows children to be removed from their families with no prior hearing and parents are routinely denied due process of law for reasons such as problems at school. The suit also seeks to prevent SDDSS from seeking and withholding Supplemental Security Income monies from those families, also without due process. ---------------------------------------------------- How Dare We? by Vicki Lockard Recently, the news carried a statement made by Trent Lott. He was responding to some criticism of George W.'s war. Mr. Lott said, "How DARE anyone question this president?" Well, Mr. Lott, my question to you is this. "How DARE we NOT questions?" It seems to me that the very foundation of the U.S. was built on questioning and rebelling against government. I also seem to remember that "freedom of speech" is one of our basic rights. ----------------------------------------------------
Haskell Wetlands by Ruth Steinberger Lakota Journal (Lawrence, KS) The Kansas Department of Transportation, acting with support from local municipalities including Douglas County and City of Lawrence, Kansas, have applied to the Army Corps of Engineers for a wetlands fill permit to allow construction to get underway on a four lane highway that may go through wetlands that are part of the Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU). Following rulings from the Department of the Interior and the Federal Highway Administration that recommend the No Build Alternative to the proposed South Lawrence Trafficway, the Kansas Department of Transportation turned to the Army Corps of Engineers for an Environmental Impact Statement and the controversial plan is again open to public comment. One of four proposed alternative routes go through Haskell campus, and the other three go through land that was part of the original campus and which is believed to contain unmarked graves from the early era of the school. Haskell was founded in 1884 as Haskell Institute, one of the off-reservation boarding schools founded by the federal government to force the assimilation of Indian children into white society. ---------------------------------------------------- Fuel Alternatives to Explore by Kasey Wolf Weaver Only after the last tree has been cut down, Only after the last river has been poisoned, Only after the last fish has been caught, Only then will you find money cannot be eaten. ...
