Joe, This is how I see it .... They should have had respect for the host Nation .... and they did not !!!
We are of many Nations and what is allowed by some is not allowed by others and we need to respect what is right for the host Nation where we are ..... Now they turn to "white mans" court to take action against what is a tradition of Our People .... What will be the next thing .... That women on there time will say they are going to court so they may enter the ring when they are on their time ....... How many of Our People ways will end up in a "white mans "court and they will be deciding what is right for us and what is not once again ....... Have we not fought for many years to have Our Traditions be decided by US and not the "White Man "....... Have many of Our Ancestors not died for us to once again have these rights .... ??? And now these women wish to take it back into the hands of the "White Man" to decide for Our People ...... Our traditions do not belong in the "white Mans " courts ...and that is the bottom line !!!!! If they are true drummers then they should be respectful of all Our People Traditions ......not just those that suite them ...... Respect is Respect .... And it is very clear they have no respect for Our People Traditions ... or this would not be taking this to a "white mans court" to get their way ..... If they want respect from Our People then they need to show respect ..... And as far as I am concerned they do not have mine .....And from what I am hearing they have lost the respect of many who did respect them ..... Crossing that line with Our Peoples Traditions was a very bad move .... now they will have a harder time to be excepted any where ...... I am the first one to stand up for any women's right and I don't have a problem with them drumming ...My problem is with their lack of Respect to All Our Nations and what they have done to get THEIR OWN WAY ...... Yellowbird I'm in favor of the last statement in the article. Each Reservation has thier own traditions. For example, some Pow-Wows allow Eagle Whistles and some don't. Some allow 2, or 1 Whistle per song. There are people at the Pow-Wows that blow there whistles just to make a point, or to push thier own beliefs on others. There is almost always controversy over this. I know because I run some large Pow-Wows on our reserve. The drums, whistles, or other things can be adressed when people register. The idea that this points to Lakota/Ojibwe conflicting traditions is pointing at a (group) of people and not looking to the real issue-----much like the media does to reservations. This conflict is between individuals not Lakota/Ojibwe. If this group wanted to set up at our Pow-Wow, I would ask our spiritual advisor and elders in attendance for input. I would make a dicision before the dance starts and NOT make it an international incident. Respectfully-if a Pow-Wow committee from Northern California wants us to not carry a baby in the Pow-Wow circle---then we have to respect that Pow-Wow committees ways and not make such a big stink about it. It would not, however, be a "continueing conflict" between that Notrthern california tribe and the Ojibwe. This happened in a metro area. Saying this is just another Intertribal confict is just another way to continue this cultural struggle faced by urbin Indians that already have a hard enough time JUST BEING INDIAN. -----Original Message----- From: andre cramblit [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, May 14, 2002 1:51 PM To: Recipient list suppressed Subject: [Native_American] D.
