2002 Vancouver, Canada
Dear friends and supporters,
After having returned from an extensive speaking tour of
native communities in central Canada, I am happy to report that enough
groups have agreed to sponsor a War Crimes Tribunal to make it now
feasible as a national project.
The enthusiasm for this
Tribunal among grassroots native people is astounding. And that
support is now percolating even into the mainstream media, which once
completely shunned our work. In April, CTV ran a major documentary
on murders in residential schools (copies of which are available
through me), and last week I spoke to over 250,000 listeners of a
major Winnipeg radio station on the facts of planned genocide in
Canada.
Because of this, our Truth Commission into Genocide in
Canada has voted to procede with the launching of a National
Tribunal within aboriginal territories, in order to systematically
document the deliberate genocide of native peoples by church and state
for more than a century.
Since June, 1998, when the first
independent investigation into Indian residential schools was held
in Vancouver under U.N.-affiliated auspices, our network has
functioned as a primarily a west coast organization. But now, active
support for our efforts exists in seven Canadian provinces, among more
than a dozen major aboriginal organizations and many hundreds of
native people.
This escalating support for our efforts to expose
genocide against native people, both past and present, is
indicated in the mushrooming sales of our 280 page report, "Hidden
from History: The Canadian Holocaust", which is now carried in more
than 50 libraries and colleges across Canada, and has become required
reading in native education classes in Ontario and British
Columbia.
This letter is to inform you of this development, and
to invite your active involvement in our plan to launch a National
"Mobile Tribunal" that will visit several dozen aboriginal communities
across Canada, and will culminate with a March on Ottawa sometime
next year.
This Mobile Tribunal will not only document in
detail the ongoing genocidal crimes against native people but will
organize the latter at the grassroots level to take direct action
against the criminals and the system responsible for the murder,
violence, and ethnic cleansing perpetrated against their nations.
You can help organize this Tribunal in your community through
the following methods:
- arrange meeting space, accomodations, and
local publicity for the Tribunal
- help facilitate the
statements and personal support of local eyewitnesses who will share
their stories
- raise travel funds for the Tribunal judges and
staff
- designate local elders or other representatives who
will travel on with the Tribunal to the final gathering on
Parliament Hill and outside the national offices of the mainline
churches
If you are able to assist with any of these details,
please contact the Provisional Organizing Committee of the
Tribunal through this email.
