We Have Many Voices - Native American
Ezine
Announcment From The bi-monthly ezine "We Have Many Voices" We have updated our website where we bring you the news behind the news. A brief description of each article is listed below, and you may read them in their entirety at our web page: We Have Many Voices Ezine http://www.turtletrack.org/ManyVoices/ ---------------------------------------------------- What is the One Sure Sign of Spring for You?
by Cathy McCarthy Anishinaabe - Metis (Non-status) Within each tribe and community, Native Women have always played a pivotal role in ensuring the health and future of their culture, their families, their communities, and their people. Today, Native Women look both to the world around them and to the teachings and traditions of those who have gone before for ways of living a balanced life in the 21st century. ---------------------------------------------------- Celebrating Outstanding Achievements by Native Performers by Suzanne Westerly, Photojournalist As the sun melted into the ocean, people began gathering at the ritzy Century City Plaza Hotel in Beverly Hills for the 10 th Annual First Americans in the Arts (FAITA) extravaganza on February 2nd. Beautifully attired women and men greeted old friends and caught up on what had been happening in each other's lives, exchanged business cards and talked about future events. ---------------------------------------------------- DAYNETTA'S STORY by Richie Plass Every once in a while we come across a story or meet someone and hear their story and we go, "I can't believe it." This is one of those stories. ---------------------------------------------------- Cell phones -- A guilty pleasure by Dorreen Yellow Bird I try to be a good citizen. I keep my foot easy on the pedal - at least when I see a light panel on the roof of approaching cars; I don't litter the highways - at least when it's not biodegradable, such as apple cores for the birds; I lend a hand if someone's car is in trouble, and give directions if asked - at least if I know where I am. I travel the region a lot. But the "pull over before you use your phone, and don't talk on the phone while driving" policy makes it difficult for me to carry on my business. ---------------------------------------------------- The Beaded Bag by Chylene E. Ramsey - a personal journey I am eight years old. I burst from the bright, yellow school bus, whooping with joy! I am finally free! Free of the stuffy old classroom that smells of old books and chalk dust! Free of the stifling confines of walls and lessons and the teacher's baleful glare! It has been torture for me to sit there for eight hours, gazing longingly out the window where the birds are flying the sweet wind is blowing and the warm sunrays shine. I race into the house just long enough to whip off my school dress and put on a sun suit, kicking off my shoes. I run past my Mom, wave, yelling "Hi Mom! Bye mom!" Before she can scold me and make me put my shoes back on. It isn't necessary to tell her where I am going ... she knows. ---------------------------------------------------- Enviro-Rants >From an All Natural Soapbox by Jamie Lockard "Oh what a tangled web we weave ... " I am in a really strange mood today, so ya'll try and bear with me and I'll do my best to make sense. Either I'm too blonde ... or I've had too much caffeine. Either way, I am liable to go off on a tangent. "What is this week's topic", your probably asking. I don't know to be honest with you, there are so many to choose from, I just prefer to gripe in general. I've gotten quite good at it lately and the daily newspaper is easy cannon fodder. ---------------------------------------------------- Help Wind Cave National Park by Kasey Wolf Weaver Wind Cave National Park in Hot Springs, South Dakota has one of the longest and most complex cave system in the world and over 28,295 acres of prairie land. When President Theodore Roosevelt signed the bill creating Wind Cave National Park in 1903, the park became the United States seventh national park. The mission of the national park remains today as it did nearly 100 years ago ... to preserve and protect the unique natural resources found there, preserving the ecosystem and supporting the wild animals and plant life that make it their home. ---------------------------------------------------- Action Alerts collected by Kasey WolfWeaver ---------------------------------------------------- Craft Series by Lynne Sageflower Pennington Lynne has decided to take a break for a while. We look forward to her return, when she is ready. ---------------------------------------------------- The "Stoic" Indian by Paul Barry In each issue, you will find a funny story here. Perhaps, even a true story or one with a moral. ---------------------------------------------------- Moccasin Telegraph - News of Interest from Indian Country Gathered by Raven Weaver ---------------------------------------------------- To Subscribe, or Unsubscribe, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and place either "Subscribe" or "Unsubscribe" in the subject line and "Many Voices" in the body of the email.
