Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002 NE - "Election materials in Sioux language in be
provided in Sheridan County" ~~~~~ After being informed of the Federal
requirement to provide non English speaking people with voting material in
their language, Sheridan County clerk Sindy Coburn made this statement,
referring to the Sioux Nation, "...it will be a waste of our time and
money." I find it interesting that signs, and pamphlets as well as
handbooks for potential drivers and voters, are written in almost every
language you can think of, Chinese, Korean, Viet Nam, Cambodian, Farsi,
Afghani, Hindu, Spanish, Japanese, etc. Yet the simple request to provide
material in the Sioux language is met with anger, resentment and bigotry.

Why are Native people treated this way? America opens it's arms to every
nationality in the world, as a Nation we welcome all who come to our
shores, we attend to their needs and greet them in their own language. Even
in the midst of war we feed our enemies and help reconstruct their country.
We do this for everyone everywhere... almost.... as long as the person or
nation asking for help is not Native American. What did we do to you? Are
you aware that the first, very first, bilingual paper printed in this
country was published by the Cherokee Nation??? In Cherokee and English...
The Cherokee people were the first to provide this service to their
conquerors and now the Sioux Nation would like the favor returned... and
what do they get? More bigotry...

We would like to have election materials available in the Sioux language.
It will encourage participation in the process.

Signed
