EMERGENCY INTERNATIONAL PRESS CONFERENCE
TO MEET AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERT AND
VICTIMS OF ALLEGED RACIAL DISCRIMINATION
TO BE HELD AT THE VANCOUVER OFFICE OF THE UNION OF BC INDIAN CHIEFS

ON: Monday, September 30th, 2002 at 11.00 a.m.
AT: the Union of BC Indian Chiefs' Vancouver Office, 342 Water Street, 5th Floor

UN Committee Against Racial Discrimination 

URGENT ISSUES to BE DISCUSSED:

     Discriminatory and Hate mail from Sun Peaks Ski Resort and residents to local indigenous peoples and their international supporters
     Provincial court decisions and upcoming court cases attempting to criminalize Aboriginal people in the exercise of their inherent rights
     Raid of a Native Home by RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) INSET (Integrated National Security Enforcement Teams)  self-describing their mandate as: �Counter-terrorism efforts require an integrated approach to help ensure early detection and prevention of any potential
     threats to national security� instead used against Aboriginal people exercising their inherent rights

SPECIFIC CLAIMS THAT: GOVERNMENT, COMPANIES like SUN PEAKS SKI RESORT AND LOCAL RESIDENTS ARE ENGAGING IN  RACIAL DISCRIMINATION TO BE VERFIED BY INTERNATIONAL EXPERT

Dr. Peter Schwarzbauer is a professor for Socio-Economics and Forest Industry at the University of Agriculture and Forestry of Vienna.  He is also the former president of the Society for Threatened Peoples Austria and is still a board member. He also heads the Working Circle for North American Indians in Vienna. He wrote several books on forestry and indigenous issues. He has shown a strong interest in the forestry and indigenous peoples in the B.C. Interior and he says that he has been disturbed by what he describes as "racist letters" aimed at the indigenous peoples of the region and their international supporters. He will be touring the region next week to research both forestry practices and indigenous rights for a report to his European colleagues.
