2002
This Bulletin goes out to selected media, other organizations and individuals who have expressed an interest. If this Bulletin has been forwarded to you and you want to be added to our list, please reply to this e-mail with your name and home and work contact information. In this Bulletin: 1. Ancient stories confirm ancient geological events on the Bruce Peninsula (Discovery Oct 7 at 7) 2. Three water pipelines proposed from Georgian Bay and Lake Huron 3. Nawash does well at North American Indigenous Games. Chief Ralph Akiwenzie is available to speak to any of the stories in this Bulletin. Phone the Council office at 519-534-1689. NOTE: If a link to the Dibaudjimoh Nawash site doesn't connect to the proper story, go to www.bmts.com/~dibaudjimoh/page4.html and scroll to the topic you are looking for. 1. ANCIENT STORIES CONFIRM ANCIENT GEOLOGICAL EVENTS On Monday, October 7th at 7pm, Discovery Channel will air a 12-minute segment on the Fathom Five Underwater Mapping project. The show will air on "The Daily Planet" (formally known as @discovery.ca). The show looks at the correspondence between geological formations found under the waters around the tip of the Bruce Peninsula and some very old Ojibway stories. For example, featured in the show is an interview with Donald Keeshig, Nawash elder, who recounts an old story of a man who walked north from the tip of the Bruce Peninsula to Manitoulin Island and meeting a man travelling south from Manitoulin Island. They exchanged gifts, each returning the way they had come. The interesting thing about the story is that the men met on land. Recent underwater mapping has shown that there indeed was a land bridge connecting the tip of the Peninsula with Manitoulin Island -- about 10-12,000 years ago! For more on this story contact Lenore Keeshig-Tobias at 519-534-4107 (cell: 519-375-2946). 2. THREE WATER PIPELINES PROPOSED FROM GEORGIAN BAY AND LAKE HURON We have learned of a proposal from the municipality of Brockton (which includes the Town of Walkerton) will be submitting a proposal to the Ontario government that calls for the building of 2 pipelines to deliver water from Lake Huron and Georgian Bay to Walkerton and rural areas in between. A study by the Ontario Clean Water Agency that looks at pipeline alternatives pegs the cost of one pipeline at $20-40 million, depending on the number of communities served and the water flow at 8,000-12,000 cubic meters a day. For the two pipelines now being proposed (one from Southampton and one from Wiarton) the cost could easily pass the $1 billion mark and transfer over 25,000 cubic meters of water a day from Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. Aside from the cost and the precedent of transferring water in bulk, there are other concerns: * The pipelines would absolve the local municipalities from the responsibility to provide clean water locally. * The pipelines would take away the pressure to clean up local surface and groundwater, leaving the way open for further pollution of groundwater. An old proposal to pipe water from Georgian Bay to Alliston to serve primarily the Toyota plant there has not only resurfaced, it has been blessed by a memorandum of understanding signed by the Ontario government. That pipeline and the two proposed for Walkerton and area are all receiving a sympathetic hearing from Chris Stockwell, the Minister of the Environment. 3. NAWASH DOES WELL AT NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES. Nawash did well for a community its size, especially since it sent no full teams as some of the larger communities were able to do like Six Nations and Moose Factory. Nawash sent 10 athletes and they brought home 6 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze. Lionel Solomon and Carman Jones: Gold Jr. men's fastball Tara Akiwenzie: 2 silvers and a bronze for badminton mixed doubles, doubles and singles. Brittany Jones: Bronze for midget girls volleyball and Roxy Jones, a bronze for coaching. For more on this story, contact Kathy Jones c/o Niishime Daycare 519-534-3909. A REMINDER: The debate over the federal government's Governance Act will intensify in the next few months. Nawash has an analysis on the web at www.bmts.com/~dibaudjimoh/page111.html. ----------------------------------------------------------- FOR MORE INFORMATION ON ITEMS IN THIS BULLETIN, CONTACT: David McLaren Communications Coordinator Chippewas of Nawash RR 5 Wiarton ON N0H 2T0 ph/fx: 519-534-4107 e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit Dibaudjimoh Nawash on the Web: http://www.bmts.com/~dibaudjimoh/ Visit the beauty of the Nawash reserve (Neyaashiinigmiing) on-line: www.capecrokerpark.com <> <><><> <><><> <><><> <><><> <><><>
