This was very good.....yes, that's what teachers make----or are
_supposed_ to make.....a difference.....

Maybe it was just my bad experience, but when i was student teaching, I
kept getting called on the carpet by the teacher I was teaching under,
for doing some of those things.....like encouraging the kids to "wonder,
question, criticize" .....i'm not kidding!

Later, after I'd graduated and was working in a school, one teacher
admitted to me, that if she wasn't so close to retirement with full
retirement benefits, she'd walk out and never look back.....

This teacher also said state guidelines didn't leave room for
independent thinking.....said we were cranking out kids who don't know
how to think an independent thought in their heads, who don't know how
to question the veracity and validity of what they're told.....said the
System wants people to follow and not question why.....sounds like
sheeple, doesn't it?

There's a LOT of burned out, disillusioned and frustrated teachers in
our schools....I know too many of them personally....they see the
Dumbing Down of America's school kids and there's not whole lot they
can do about it, due to their curriculum accountability (teaching what
the State dictates) and reams of paperwork they are required to do, to
satisfy the State.....

As NA's well know, trying to buck the System for changes "ain't" all
that easy....

Many are opting out and going into other professional venues because
they refuse to be part of the Dumbing Down process, and then, some are
mulishly staying in the ring no matter what....those who DO stay in
because they want to try one more time to make a difference, have my
support.....

Those who are in the educational arena because they think it's "an easy
job," well....I hope their chalk crumbles....they are part of the
problem in our schools.....

But, ideally, this was a great post....

Gettin' off my soap box now--

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One
man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued:
"What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in
life was to become a teacher?" He reminded the other dinner guests that
it's true what they say about teachers: "Those who can do. Those who
can't teach."
To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a teacher, Susan, be
honest. What do you make?"
Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness, replied, "You want
to know what I make?"
"I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I can make a
C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor and an A- feel like a
slap in the face if the student did not do his or her very best."
"I can make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute
silence."
"I can make parents tremble in fear when I call home"
"You want to know what I make?"
"I make kids wonder."
"I make them question."
"I make them criticize."
"I make them apologize and mean it."
"I make them write."
"I make them read, read, read."
"I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely beautiful, and
definitely beautiful over and over and over again, until they will never
misspell either one of those words again."
"I make them show all their work in math and hide it all on their final
drafts in English."
"I make them understand that if you have the brains, then follow your
heart ... and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you
pay them no attention."
"You want to know what I make?"
"I make a difference." What about you??
