Seh:kon, Greetings

Waneek Horn, of Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, and co-captain of the
Canadian Womens National Water Polo Team, helped lead her team to win
gold medals at the Pan American Games just held in Winnipeg Manitoba.
They won all their games along with the gold medal game against the
United States on July 30th 1999. Waneek scored three of the goals.

Waneek, 23 years old, is the Youth Representative on the board of the
Canadian Alliance in Solidarity with the Native Peoples (CASNP) and has
been prominently involved in and speaking on native youth issues most of
her life, including being at the compound in Oka that was surrounded by
the Canadian army in 1990. The Mohawk were protesting the expansion of
a golf course over an Indian cemetary and ceremonial site for the
Montreal leisure class. She was stabbed in the chest by a soldier while
protecting her 4 year old sister. She carries a scar over her heart
from this attack. But she put it all behind her. She just finished
Carleton University with a degree in political science and at the same
time went on to develop into one of the world's best water polo players.

On Friday, August 6th 1999, the Mohawk people of Kahnawake are holding a
celebration of her achievements and a fund raiser for her voyage to
Australia for the Olympic Games in the year 2000. The celebration will
be at 7:00 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Send a letter of congratulations to Waneek Horn and a donation to help
her with her expenses. Your letter will be read to the people, the more
the better. Send it by email or fax by Thursday August 5th.
