Tribes now fully in charge of
housing programs

PABLO -- The Tribal Council's recent approval of Ordinance 38C
draws new lines of authority for dealing with housing issues on the
Flathead Reservation.

The revised ordinance reflects changes mandated by the Native
American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act of 1996
(NAHASDA), Salish Kootenai Housing Authority director Bob
Gauthier said this week.

The most significant change, he said, is that tribal governments are now
in charge of determining and meeting local needs without having to
accommodate federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
standards that were written with big-city issues in mind.
