OFFICIAL NEWS OF THE FLAT HEAD RESERVATION
PABLO -- Representatives of 50 tribes are participating in an "Honor
Our Ancestors" rally and vigil in New Mexico this week to raise the
general American public's awareness of Indian Country's concerns over
the study of ancient human remains.

Rally organizers will also be holding a national "moment of silence"
tomorrow (Dec. 12) at 3 p.m. (MST) "to reflect on our ancestors, our
people and our future generations, and to ask the Creator for the divine
blessings we need for cultural survival," in the words of rally supporter
Velda Shelby of Pablo.

Of immediate concern are proposed changes to NAGPRA, the Native
American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, which was enacted
in 1990 to address tribal concerns about the scientific study, and final
disposition, of human remains and funerary objects of probable Native
American origin.

It's been proposed that NAGPRA be amended to allow the study,
which sometimes requires partial damage, of all "culturally unidentifiable
remains" in spite of Native beliefs that all human remains, regardless of
ethnic origin, are sacred and should be allowed to exist forever
undisturbed.
