More than seven thousand people are dead and tens of thousands are without homes and food. Widespread hunger, even cases of starvation, are currently being reported. Several indigenous communities have been particularly hard hit. The Confederation of Autochtonous Peoples of Hunduras (CONPAH) has sent an urgent appeal for help. "The hurricane has devastated the lives of tens of thousands of people, the majority of whom are indigenous and black-Black Islanders, Garifunas, Miskitos, Xicaques and Tolupanes." As this issue goes to press, the northern portion of Hunduras is bracing for more flooding as post-hurricane rains continue. CONPAH is coordinating relief and reconstruction efforts with indigenous communities.
