And now:Ish <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: >From BIGMTLIST To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 22:38:52 -0000 From: "mauro deoliveira" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> One week after our caravan left for Big Mountain with food, I am on the road again. After drving 6 hours, I reached the large Ward Valley encampment about 2 in the morning. John Benally met with me, my two passengers and a few supporters that knew what was goiong on with the livestock impoundments. He and Leonard, his brother, will be staying through the weekend to build support for Ward Valley activists to continue on to Big Mountain to cover the next couple of weeks when livestock impoundment seems iminent. We brought him over 300 flyers with maps to Glenna Begays where a receiving camp is being set up to recieve supporters. >From there the support will be guided to other Hogan sites where no support exists. The passengers with me are going to be a part of that camp and make sure that if any one from ward valley does go up then information and direction will given. So after 45 minutes at Ward Valley we are on the road again. Eight hours later we met up with Marsha and Carlos at Greyeye's home. Yes, they still need desperately a new ceiling inside...it is falling and waterlogged. The roof was already fixed by some great support ( ithink from flag) but the inside is still fallen and very DREARY. Two carpenters for a weekend could raise the spirits of Huck and Genevieve Greyeyes. Marsha and Carlos had met us there after visiting three other Homesites that day. At each stop they had business, particular to each family, that would follow through into some paperwork that is intended for Geneva. I cannot stress to all of you on the Big Mountain list how important and vital is Marsha's work. I remember how I met her, at Pauline's, firing around getting communications straight for meetings that the Elders wanted to have that summer. Because of my camera work, I was permitted to attend those meetings. Through all that and the food that we caravan, I have been fortunate enough to work on some of the inside behind the scenes work, like the UN Summit. Anyway, Marsha has been on the mountain since August, non-stop travel and communications with The World Council of Curches, United Methodist, leading scholars, well you get the picture. And right now she is on the land, writing down the words of the Elders as they are translated by Carlos. This week it is a combination of her delivering them important dates from a VIP visit and getting thier testimonies about the stress they are now recieving with these impoundments. She is also there to witness and defend in this volitile situation with impoundment. I work closely with Marsha because she is deep in the fabric of the Sovereign Dineh Nation. She has organized most all of their NGO support and has brought real hope to this tragedy. She travels on the mountain only at the mercy of those who can drive her around. Carlos has been footing the fuel bill now for months. Her phone is alson paid for by Carlos, her sister in New York and a small reliable financial group that are lucky if they have any money left at the end of the week. We all need to support this person. THERE IS NO ONE ELSE, OUTSIDE OF THE GRANDMOTHERS, THAT IS DOING THIS VITAL WORK. I will be glad to talk to anyone who needs more information to make a choice as to thier contributions. I recommend that funds to the Sovereign Dineh Nation be sent to thier fiscal agent, SEE at Earth Trust. Talk to Steve Sugerman at 310 456 8300. That way, the board of Directors of the SDN, including Roberta and Glenna, can decide that funds are available to Marsha. Right now there is no money in that account. Marsha needs a cell phone, pickup truck, printer cartridges, paper, phone time ($$$). Also they are over 3000 dollars short of the airline funds they need for Geneva. It would be sad if the Elders were not able to attend the very meeting that generations have had to live and die for. It is time, all of you out there, to form groups and pitch in ppennies, dimes...everything to get some of this work done right. Right now Glenna feels safe because there is supporter on her land. They are self sufficient. She does not know what will happen if they come for her livestock. Twenty years ago, armed resistance and hundreds of supporters surrounded this issue by being on the land. After dropping off my passengers at Glenna's, I spent the night and made the 14 hour trip back home. But first I stopped at Ward Valley to see how many had gone to Big Mountain. Only one, John and Leonard's ride home, had done so.
