HELENA - Public schools that teach large numbers of Indian students should
not be allowed to give preference to Indian teachers and other potential
staff when hiring, the House of Representatives decided Monday.

On a 46-54 vote, the House rejected House Bill 529, by Rep. Carol Juneau,
D-Browning, to allow schools to give Indians an extra edge is getting hired
by reservation and some other schools. The
bill was killed on a party-line vote, with just six Republicans voting in
favor and two Democrats against.
