NAS Opens Mailing List on BEIR VII

Readers of this list may recall an essay I posted in late 1998 calling on
the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to open up the process for setting
the next round of radiation standards. This is the issue of determining
the biological effects of ionizing radiation (BEIR). On 2/23/99 I
received an email message from the NAS study director announcing the
organization has established a mailing list and will establish a web site
to facilitate interaction with the public on BEIR VII. This is a
significant departure from previous practice for the NAS. The Email
message and contact information for the mailing list are included below.

Thanks for the Email - we received your message from the public comment
section of our Web site. In an attempt to increase the accessibility of
BEIR VII information to the public, we are creating a list of Email
addresses. If you would like your address added to the list, please let
me know by return Email. If you know of any other interested individuals,
have them contact me at this address and we will add them to the list.
BEIR VII, a 3 year study, is in the process of committee formation.

We hope to establish a WEB site dedicated to BEIR VII. There would then
be a BEIR VII Web site with its own URL [in addition to the NAS Web site]
and a BEIR VII list server for Email messages from BRER to interested
parties. With these three efforts we intend to receive input, disseminate
information, and increase public awareness of opportunities for public
input to the BEIR VII committee process.

Sincerely,

Rick Jostes

Anyway we think we have found the way to cause the disintegration of the
