I asked him how he could have authorized to confiscate Rena Babbitt Lane's horse. He indicated that that was one horse over her allotment, and that's what the Hopi and Arapaho had agreed to, i.e., an allotment agreement. "It's the law, ma'm!" I asked him how he can take away sheep from people who need the animals for food and wool to weave rugs, their main livelihood, and he said that's not what they're doing; just meeting the allotment requirements agreed to by the Hopi and Arapaho. "That's the Law, ma'm!", with a chuckle. I asked him why they weren't treating white people to the same allotment numbers, and he said there weren't any whites living there. I asked him how he slept at night, knowing he was party to such inhumane pressure onto elders; he said he slept just fine. Another chuckle. Then wished me a good day. He seemed very sure of himself, very smug, very righteous, everything he is doing is based on "that's the law, ma'm!". What could I possibly have said that would make this man, and others like him, change his perception of what is right and humane? I am at a loss..............
