And now:Ish <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: via "Wild Rockies Alerts" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Day of Prayer for Yellowstone Buffalo Prayer will honor 2 buffalo slaughtered Friday, Feb. 26, and others this season *** Ceremonies in West Yellowstone, MT and Gardiner, MT 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, February 26, 1999 Media Contacts: Mike Mease, (406) 646-0070, Scott Frazier, (406) 587-7606 WEST YELLOWSTONE, MT- On Saturday, February 27, 1999, at noon, Scott Frazier, Santee and Crow Indian from Bozeman, will hold a pipe ceremony with Buffalo Field Campaign at the tripod blockade on Horse Butte in the Gallatin National Forest near West Yellowstone. The public is invited to join us in prayer on site. The prayer will be held in conjunction with the ceremony that will be held at the same time in Gardiner, Montana, by a group of Indigenous Elders, leaders, and supporters who walked over 500 miles in order to draw attention to the plight of the buffalo. Scott Frazier has been a long time sympathizer to the plight of the buffalo and has been involved with their struggle since the early 1980's. He led the first Sundance held in Yellowstone Park, and has led a Sundance for world peace in England. "The buffalo issue is an issue for all people to be aware of and to participate in. As Native people, we have no priority, but rather an obligation as human beings to participate in this struggle. I personally go to the front lines to appreciate the passion of the volunteers who have sacrificed themselves to protect the buffalo," stated Frazier. The prayer in West Yellowstone is held in conjunction with the ceremony in Gardiner in order to amplify the voice of people from around the country who care about the Yellowstone buffalo. Says Frazier, "I look to the Yellowstone buffalo as being the last wild herd. From that herd I look for a white calf, which will unite us all. The policy of killing them limits our potential for a grand future for all people." Two more buffalo were shipped to slaughter early this morning after the Department of Livestock captured them yesterday. Two other captured buffalo were shipped north of the park and released into the Lamar Valley inside of the Park. "The Department of Livestock's decision to kill two buffalo this morning is a real slap in the face to all of the people who have walked, sacrificed, and prayed for the buffalo. Two years ago, the DOL killed buffalo during a prayer ceremony. It is unbelievable that this agency would again show so much disrespect to people who gather to pray for the buffalo," said Sue Nackoney, Buffalo Field Campaign spokesperson. Buffalo Field Campaign volunteers have sat in platforms in tripods that have blockaded construction of a new bison capture facility on Horse Butte for nearly 5 weeks since January 25, 1999. Volunteers also monitor all of the buffalo outside of the park on the west boundary, and there have been 8 arrests of volunteers who have attempted to document, block, or stop Department of Livestock buffalo killing operations. A new bill on buffalo management was introduced into the Montana State House Agriculture Committee on February 19. The bill will change buffalo management in Montana, and serve to prevent the needless slaughter of buffalo by the MT. Department of Livestock. A hearing is expected early next week. HB 643 can be found at http://161.7.127.14/bills/billhtml/HB0643.htm.
