Saturday, February 27, 1999 Globe and Mail

Looking at the the fall lineup planned by the new
Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, one is first
of all struck by just what an incredible venture this
is: the magic, mystery and mysticism of an ancient
                        culture transmitted through cutting-edge
20th-century technology. The listing guide (right)
details some of the fare offered by the nascent
network -- from the useful Beading with Bernelda
to the spiritual Circle of Knowledge. The APTN,
                        representing Canada's aboriginal population of
800,000, won the right this week to be part of the
basic cable-television package across Canada when
it debuts this fall. A sampling of other programs
                        follow.

Tales From the Longhouse is a half-hour series
about a community of animals based on traditional
native characters. A combination of puppetry, live
action and animation, it will revolve around the
attempts of a mythical spirit who can change his
shape at will to influence the lives of a community
                        of animals.

In Medicine Walker, viewers learn the secrets and
gifts of the land that have kept aboriginal people
healthy through the seasons. The program will
demonstrate how traditional knowledge enabled the
elders to approach a northern lake with nothing
more than a sharp axe and sustain themselves over
a number of days or a season.

Theatre of the First Peoples is a series of plays by
                        aboriginal playwrights.

Native Feasts is a cross-Canada travel and cooking
                        series featuring traditional native foods.

Pow-Wow Trail is a series on Indian dancing that
will focus on the history and people who make up
                        the current pow-wow trail.

First Perspective is a Vancouver-based talk show
featuring aboriginals from all walks of life --
authors, politicians, business people, athletes and
                        musicians.
