Dear Friends, Relatives, Colleagues of Bruce,
Bruce is home and resting...and truly moved by the 500 emails awaiting
his purusal and no doubt reply. He says he is going to get back on-line by
the end of the week. Though I imagine it will be sooner! Now if we could
all just send him casseroles by email, he'd be all set!
News: TV here today covered local Lions Club being repudiated by Lions
Int'l. But local club did not recant or apologize but simply said this is
the way we feel and it may not be consistent with what the Int'l feels. It
would appear the catch is that the local is supposed to abide by the Lions
Int'l mission, by-laws, etc. We feel that the local club should be
disciplined or have its charter revoked. And we will send that message to
Lions International. Please do the same! [EMAIL PROTECTED]
News: Our Senator (never elected with more than 54% of the vote in
recent elections) Jesse Helms is in the news today. He wrote a letter of
rebuke to Janet Reno for opening the investigation of the Buncombe County
Schools. He says the American Indian mascot issue has no meaning, that
these kinds of issues were settled long ago, and that the Justice Dept. is
just going on a fishing trip. If you want to let him know how you feel, his
office number is 1-202-224-6342 (if anyone knows of his email
address...please share it with us all) As you know, he is well-versed at
playing the race card.
Thanks for all everyone is doing. (Our school board met in closed session
today to discuss the mascot issue with their attorney. The vote is next
Thursday, March 4)
Best,
Monroe

PS On referral from the Greensboro Justice Fund, I spoke tonight with an
inspiring leader, Kathy Marchian, who just lost a school board election
last week in the Waveryly, MA area because she voted to eliminate the
"redskin" mascot at Frontier High School (serves 4 towns in the area). The
Board did vote to eliminate the name in December 1997 on a 5-4 vote but the
other side filed a lawsuit the night before a new name was to be chosen.
Now the other side is trying to regain enough seat on the board to change
the name back (Since Dec 1997, the team has be the 'nothings' as the
lawsuit forbade the choosing of a new name.) She told me that she would
still have voted for the change even knowing she was going to lose (her
opponent had this issue and none other) I failed to get her email address
but if you want to send her a message, send it to me and I'll get it to her
