Jacobs fatality inquiry resumes
By NOVA PIERSON, CALGARY SUN
A search for answers into the deaths of Connie and Ty Jacobs
resumes today on the Tsuu T'ina Nation.
The fatality inquiry for the mother and son shot by a Mountie last
March begins again after a two-week break.
"I think people are satisfied it's making some progress," Tsuu
T'ina spokesman Peter Manywounds said yesterday. "But I don't
think they've heard what they need to hear."
The inquiry began Feb. 1 with testimony by Dr. Lloyd Denmark,
the medical examiner, saying Connie, 37, and Ty, 9, died within
minutes or seconds of being shot.
Officers responding to the scene said they were briefed that
Okotoks RCMP Const. Dave Voller fired a single blast of his
shotgun after Connie fired at him.
He was at the scene to help social workers trying to take
Connie's children.
Judge Thomas Goodson is expected to give his decision today on
whether the children's social services files can be admitted into
the inquiry.
The cross-examination of Cpl. Douglas Morrison -- the officer
called to negotiate with Connie before it was learned she was
dead -- is also scheduled today.
Connie's husband, Hardy Jacobs, is to testify March 23, one day
after the anniversary of the deaths, according to the proposed
witness list.
Another 13 weeks of testimony are scheduled for the inquiry.
Manywounds said the decision to allow the hearing on the Tsuu
T'ina Nation has allowed band and family members to attend.
"It was really a tragedy and the way it unfolded really did affect
the community," he said.
