Tues: 3/9/99: The Killings in Columbia
Native America Calling is preempting the program for 3/9/99 to continue our
discussion about the kidnapping and killings in Columbia. The bodies of
Ingrid Washinawatok, Terence Freitas and Lahe'ena'e Gay were found last
Friday just across the Colombian Border in Venezuela. The three were
working with the Uwa Indians, who have been fighting oil development on the
land. They were also helping to organize local schools on Uwa lands. On
this special edition we speak with some of the International negotiating
team and try to answer the questions that everyone has been asking: who was
responsible for these crimes and what can be done to protect our organizers
in the third world.
For those of you who received the announcement titled: Indian Women Murdered
in Columbia, I would personally like to apologize for sending out some
misinformation. I assure it was unintentionally. It was not three
Indigenous women that were killed, but rather two women and a man. Also,
for clarification Ms. Washinawatok is from the Menominee Nation, Ms. Gay is
Native Hawai'ian and Mr. Freitas is Xicano. I would have not sent out the
announcement without confirmation of facts, but I wanted to make sure that
as many people were able to listen and join in the live discussion as
possible. Due to the last minute change of topics and some glitches with
e-mail I did not get the program change from Native America Calling in
Albuquerque until after I had sent out the announcement that I was able to
put together by listening to the program off the satellite in Lincoln, NE.
Native America Calling will be continuing its discussion on the murders
tomorrow (3-9-99) from 1pm-2pm ET. AIROS will be re-webcasting the program
from today (3-8-99) from noon-1pm ET on 3-9-99 for those of you that were
unable to join in and listen from the beginning. Guests on the program
included Winona LaDuke, founder of the Women's Indigenous Network; Menominee
Tribal Chairman Apesanahkwat; one of Ingrid's cousins from the Menominee
Nation calling on behalf of Ingrid's family and many others from across
Indian Country. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to e-mail
me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call me at
402.472.3287. I hope that my sending out the information before
confirmation did not cause complication for anyone and I hope that you were
all able to or will be able to listen to this program.
