THUNDER BAY, ONT - Protesters from Aroland First Nation are blocking
access to a forest north of Thunder Bay, Ontario. They set up two road
blocks Friday outside the Nakina Forest which is near their reserve. The
protesters are trying to prevent logging trucks from Buchanan's Long Lake
Forest Products Company from getting into cutting areas in the forest.
The First Nations people want to establish a partnership with the
logging company to share the benefits of logging on the land. But they say
the company is ignoring their demands.
Buchanan is licensed to log in two areas. The company vowed when it
received its logging licence that it would ensure First Nation
participation in economic benefits and involvement in decision making.
Under federal law, First Nations are entitled to take part in forestry
development.
