HAIDA REMAINS RETURNED BY BC UNIVERSITY
CBC News WebPosted Sat Mar 13 12:57:44 1999

VANCOUVER - The University of British Columbia is returning the
skeletal remains of six natives to the Haida people. Their return is
the culmination of more than a year of negotiations.
The university's archeology lab decided the remains they obtained in
1967 should not be studied for scientific purposes but instead should
have a decent burial. The skulls and bones could be up to 4,500 years
   old.

Although the University of B.C. has returned remains to Indians on a
few other occasions, this ceremony marks the first time the university
has returned human remains to the Haida.
An elaborate 11-hour ceremony will be held Saturday at the Museum of
Anthropology in Vancouver. It will include dancing, prayers, gift
   giving, and a feast.
Rituals include burning of salmon and berries to provide support for
the Haida souls' journey to the land of spirits.
