(HRI) to begin In-situ leach uranium mining using our sole source of drinking water in a time of drought and shortage. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT AFFECTS ALL THE HUMAN RACE...STOP THE DEADLY NUCLEAR CYCLE!! PROTECT OUT LAND, AIR AND WATER (LAW) FOR MORE INFO CALL: 202/328-0002 ********************* News Release The deadly cycle of the nuclear chain must be broken or else the human race remains under the threat of extinction as endangered species. Since the rediscovery of the splitting of the atom, millions have died and millions more will perish as the world's nuclear posers continue on their trek towards the eve of destruction unbridled and without wisdom. As America refuses to seek other safe alternatives for its energy supply, uranium is relied upon to solve the problems of its energy demand without regard to the aftermath that is created with is extraction; this is especially true of the regions that depend upon nuclear reactors to meet the people's everyday 'needs' for comfort. There is no thought as to where the source of uranium comes from, where the waste products will be stored, and the far-reaching future impacts that it has upon all human beings and other life forms. The self-regulated, renegade Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) hands out permits and licenses to spiritually bankrupt corporations that exploit the fears of the unknown and have held our Mother Earth in contempt for too long. The puppet Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB) has set the process for destruction into motion and has shown itself to be just as dangerous as the "terroristic" countries that are condemned by the United Sates leadership, yet the American people remain complacent and apathetic to their crimes against humanity. "The Red Nations are reminders that we are under a government that sees the act of genocide against human beings as acceptable' stated Mervyn Tilden, a member of the Dine' (Navajo) Tribe. But we are spiritual beings that were placed here to be caretakers of the earth and given specific instructions so that we may live in harmony and balance with all of creation. If we do not change our present course, we will heap suffering upon suffering upon ourselves, we must change directions now before it is too late." The NRC and ASLB have given the green light to another company called Hydro Resources, Inc. (HRI) to begin operations on and near Navajo Nation in Church Rock and Crownpoint, New Mexico using the regions sole source of pristine drinking water with a new and unsafe method called "in situ leach" (ISL) solution mining, even though the vast majority of people -- not just Navajos -- have publicly objected to its plan. Financially bankrupt HRI has filed for Chapter 11 protection and still expects to begin operations as a National Priority List Super Fund site regardless of the devastation and disease that has some with years of underground mining and a 1979 spill that released over 98 million gallons of hot radioactive tailings into the Puerco River that runs through Church Rock and ultimately impacting eleven (11) Navajo communities. "Our water supply is once again threatened and the lives of many endangered in the name of economic development," said Tilden, " At a time when peace and prosperity is being proclaimed by our trusted leaders, we have yet to see environmental justice fulfilled as it is intended in President Clinton's Executive Order on Environmental Justice 12898. And this, as a time when there is a drought and an anticipated near -future water shortage." The issue of uranium extraction is clarified by the current glut of uranium on the world market -- the only safe place for it is to be left underground and undisturbed. Dumping nuclear waste on Red Nations land is tantamount to genocide. As sane and clear thinking people we must remind our world leaders that all man-made laws in the books are not above divine laws give to us for out's and future generation's benefit. The NRC, HRI and ASLB know this to be truth, let us hold them accountable for their insanity. We want to thank all of you out there of your patience and understanding -- there is still much work to be done. On March 22 and 23, 1999, a representative from SDN-Dineh Alliance will be in Washington, D.C. to deliver a message from The People to those who think the "Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute" is settled. Your help is needed to awaken the leadership in D.C. to our reality. We are calling for a massive letter writing campaign, e-mail, phone calls, and a fax attack immediately so that it will coincide with the efforts of the RESISTANCE. Some officials (*) include Senators John McCain, Jon Kyle, Ben Nighthorse-Campbell, Daniel Inyouye, Peter Domenici, and the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs. Please make sure to contact US President Bill Clinton and (newly elected) Navajo Nations President Kelsey Begaye and Vice President Taylor McKenzie. Again, write to your local newspaper, churches and your Congressional representative. On April 1, 1999, there will be a demonstration/march in Flagstaff, Arizona. All supporters are asked to congregate at Wheeler Park beginning at 10:00 AM, we will then march to the Office of Navajo-Hopi Indian Relocation (ONHIR) to protest the on-going problems that have existed since the 1974 Relocation Act (P.L. 93-531) and which were create by the Accommodation Agreement under P.L. 104-301. Since this is slated to be an international event marking the 10 month count-down to February 1, 2000, we are also asking that is you cannot make it to Flagstaff, make this big event happen in your home town. Spring Gathering 1999 has been proposed for the end of May at Camp Anna Mae. Food, material aid, water barrels and your creative thinking is needed. The negotiations for the 1999 Sun Dance are on-going (TBA), this also coincides with the D.C. trip -- a visit to the U.S. Department of Justice is in order to address the religious issues not included in the Agreement(*) [see the above list of individuals who need to be contacted in this matter]. In mid-April, some elders from Big Mountain and the Hopi Partitioned Land (HPL) will be traveling from Olympia, Washington to Santa Cruz, California for a speaking tour. Please help coordinate this tour by setting up speaking engagements in your cities and by providing a place for them to stay and meals while in your town.
