And now:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (S.I.S.I.S.) writes: PROFESSOR STILL ESPOUSES RACE-INTELLIGENCE THEORY London Free Press, March 11, 1999 by Peter Geigen Miller [S.I.S.I.S. note: The following mainstream news article may contain biased or distorted information and may be missing pertinent facts and/or context. It is provided for reference only.] The furore has died but Philippe Rushton continues to quietly pursue his controversial theory that evolution has made black people less intelligent and less sexually restrained than Asians and whites. A decade after exploding into national and international notoriety by espousing his theory at a scientific conference in San Francisco, the University of Western Ontario psychology professor has receded from media and public attention. But the professor whose theories were branded "more loony than criminal" publishes six to 10 scholarly papers a year in academic journals and travels to speak at conferences. He has an Internet site outlining his background and career highlights and his articles are posted on numerous other Web sites. An abridged version of his 1995 book, Race, Evolution and Behavior: A Life-History Perspective, is "in the pipeline" and will be published soon. And he continues his research on the connection of brain size and mental abilities to sex and race. "It's the same kind of work that caused the furore in the first place," he said in an interview this week. His theory holds that Asians average larger brain size, greater intelligence, more sexual restraint, slower rates of physical maturation and greater "law abidingness" than whites, who in turn average higher scores than blacks. The topic is as hotly debated as ever but the argument has moved from the front pages of newspapers to the more subdued arena of academic journals. Although many critics continue to dismiss his work as scientific rubbish, Rushton said nothing that's happened since his January 1989 San Francisco speech has shaken his conviction. "As far as I can see, the research that's been gathered in the last 10 years just corroborates, for the most part, all the things I was saying back then," he said. "From a scientific standpoint, my position is as strong or stronger than it was then." The political climate is another matter, he said. "Political correctness within universities has become a lot worse than it was even 10 years ago. "It's not a problem for me personally because things have died down here but it's very bad in places like Europe." Colleagues doing similar work have been attacked or even dismissed for their views, he said. The fear of public backlash has meant others struggle to find publishers for books on race theories. Rushton vows to continue his work, marshalling arguments to combat what he calls the "huge pretense" that race differences do not exist or can be explained by factors other than heredity.
