HALIFAX (CP) - Premier Russell MacLellan apologized Thursday for
suggesting black and native lawyers in the province aren't as qualified as
their white colleagues. "I'm sorry for any hurt my remarks might have
caused the graduate students," the Liberal leader said in the legislature.

On Wednesday, MacLellan told the house that big law firms arent hiring
black and Mikmaq graduates because they dont have the same law education as
others. "I'm not convinced, frankly, there's one standard all the way
through," he said of the Indigenous Black and Mikmaq program at Dalhousie
Universitys law school. "All were doing is leading the blacks and
aboriginals on. We've got to be fair."

Dalhousie law dean Dawn Russell said MacLellan doesn't know what he's
talking about. "He seemed to think there's a different program for
minorities," she said. "That, of course, is absolutely false." All law
students complete the same requirements and bar exams, she said.

MacLellan apologized as several students from the black and Mikmaq law
program looked down from the spectators gallery. "We're just as competent,
were just as qualified as anybody else," said an aboriginal woman. "He has
set us back 100 years."

Ricolla Slaughter, a black student who will graduate in the spring, said
the premiers comments reinforce stereotypes. "It affects us, it affects our
work prospects," she said.

On Thursday, the head of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society urged the
government to apply affirmative action requirements when awarding contracts
for legal services.

Darrell Pink said he supports tying affirmative action requirements to
legal contracts. "It is a problem across the profession as it's a problem
across the province," he said. "I don't single out the legal profession on
this one. It's an issue for every institution in this province."
