And now:Ish <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: <><><><><><><>NASC NEWS<><><><><><><> Imagine taking one day of all of our lives and surrounding Arlington Cemetary with shovels, bulldozers and greed. Digging up the bodies there to take the bones, gold and silver teeth, antiques many have been buried in, etc., and then placing these on the market for sale, showcasing them in our homes, putting the remains in our own "museums" for others to see. All of us have lost someone within our lives as children and even as adults, and when they are put to rest in whatever manner, you feel assured that they will be unharmed forever. This is not the way that it is with the Native American grave sites. While those in the inner cities would never concern themselves with grave robbing, we must. While they find their loved ones secure in the Catholic cemetaries, we must fight to regain bones from scientist for reburial and then again, fight for the funerary items such as pipes, bowls, shawls, etc. to rebury them also. Greed overcomes that which is right. Laws have to be created to protect us and those laws do not cover us completely. The Native American Grave Protection Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) covers only those people and institutions which receive Federal Monies. Even as I type this letter to you, Sotheby's Auction House is preparing a large sale of Native American artifacts to include pipe's that belong to a private individual. This person is not included into the NAGPRA act. There are scientist who are currently fighting the NAGPRA laws so that they may "help to have a better understanding of pre-white histories within the United States." Friends of America's Past- Fighting NAGPRA http://www.friendsofpast.org/main.html Over the next few weeks NASC News will be offering a series of articles regarding a current NAGPRA issue out of Lincoln, Nebraska. Each state seemingly has one or more NAGPRA issue facing them, however, there are not enough educated voices. Please take the time to educate yourself on this issue of Our Ancestor's Bones, go to the web sites we are to offer you. Send in your letters, web links of those you find online displaying pipes, baby moccassins with a foot bone sticking out, to sale them and let us know of current problems within your state so that we can let many know, in an attempt to bring together many voices against this attrocity.
