Ottawa - The exploding aboriginal population could threaten the Canadian
economy in the next decade unless more is done to improve their job
prospects, the Conference Board of Canada warned yesterday. "If nothing is
done there will be a much bigger problem," said Stelios Loizides, author of
a new study on employment and young aboriginals. "The reality is it is
pretty bad right now and it could get worse." The population of working-age
aboriginals is growing so dramatically - three to five times faster than
the national average - that another 160,000 will have to find work by 2006
just to keep the jobless rate at its present level, the study says. That
would mean increasing the number of employed aboriginals by 50%.

"Given that this group has traditionally suffered from high unemployment,
improving their employment prospects will be critical to Canada's
performance and potential," the study concludes. Unemployment is generally
considered to be 60% to 80% on reserves. The Conference Board called for
stepped up efforts to keep young aboriginals in school and do more to help
them find jobs when they graduate.
