Judge Rules For State Against Tribe - (HARTFORD) -- The towns of North
Stonington, Preston and Ledyard have won their battle with Mashantucket
Pequots over land. A judge ruled the tribe cannot expand its reservation by
annexing 165-acres of adjacent land. The towns argued successfully that
allowing the Native Americans to take the land would eliminate it from
their tax rolls. The Pequots' reservation encompasses one-thousand acres...
including the Foxwoods Casino.
Tribe Acquires More Land - (ROUND VALLEY) -- A large Indian reservation in
Mendocino County is growing even larger. The Round Valley tribe has bought
eleven-thousand acres of forest adjacent to its 30- thousand-acre
reservation. The land was purchased for more than one-Million dollars. It
was previously owned by a family of ranchers.
Santee Tribe Faces Contempt Charges - (SANTEE) -- The Santee Tribe faces a
contempt of court charge for operating a casino. The U-S Attorney's Office
filed the motion earlier this week after the tribe's failure to close down
its Las Vegas-style casino in northeast Nebraska. State law prohibits
casino operations. Tribal leaders say the law does NOT pertain to them due
to a federal Native American regulation.
