TUMBLEWEEDS RECEIVE MEDIA ATTENTION - HANFORD SITE, RICHLAND
OPERATIONS OFFICE
A Hanford area newspaper, The Tri-City Herald, ran a 12/27 story regarding the
contaminated tumbleweeds found outside the Radiological Buffer Area of the
Hanford
Site. The story was positive in detailing progress that has been made. DOE
and its
contractors are working to control the spread of contamination from biological
transport (to include vegetation, animals and insects). As a result of the
story, Fluor

ACUTE TOXICITY FOUND IN KENTUCKY POLLUTANT DISCHARGE ELIMINATION
SYSTEM (KPDES) - PADUCAH GASEOUS DIFFUSION PLANT
As a result of routine compliance sampling of the KPDES, a water sample taken
from a tributary located west of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant access
road
was sent to an offsite laboratory for analysis. On December 18, 1998, results
indicating an acute toxicity were received from the offsite laboratory. The
sample had
been collected on October 6, 1998, and the acute toxicity was measured by the
laboratory at 1.5 Toxicity Units Acute (TUa). An additional retest was
initiated with
the next rainfall on December 21, 1998. Results of that retest were received
on
December 28, 1998. The toxicity of this second sample was measured at 2.2 TUa.
As the toxicity exceeded 1.2 times the TUa limit of 1.0 TUa for both samples,
Toxicity Reduction Evaluation (TRE) is required by the KPDES permit. A plan
and
implementation schedule will be submitted to the Kentucky Division of Water
(KDOW) within 30 days of notification. No cause for the toxicity was
identified by the
initial investigation. However, through the TRE, further investigation may
reveal the
source of toxicity and allow remediation of the problem. Per permit
requirements,
the KDOW was notified verbally on December 28, 1998 of the failure of two
consecutive tests, and by formal letter through the Department of Energy Site
Office
within the five day legal notification requirement. (Information from ORPS
