TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona Sen. John McCain, former chairman of the Senate
Select Committee
on Indian Affairs, took his first step toward a bid for the presidency in
the year 2000, by filing
papers to create a presidential exploratory committee.

McCain's move allows him to begin raising the estimated $20 million - about
$60,000 a day - he
will need to be considered a viable candidate by his fellow Republicans.

"This is a significant step for him to set up a committee," said Howard
Opinsky, spokesman for
the John McCain for President Exploratory Committee.

Sen. McCain, 62, formerly chaired the Senate's Indian affairs committee,
now chaired by Sen.
Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo.
