Nez Perce to run own welfare plan
--Boise _ The Nez Perce Indian Tribe has been granted federal approval for
a welfare program that will be administered by tribal officials.
The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwes of Minnesota, the Confederated Salish and
Kootenai tribes of Montana and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community of Arizona also have received approval for welfare programs.
``We are pleased that these tribes are exercising the opportunity to
create culturally appropriate welfare programs for their unique
communities,'' said Olivia Golden, a U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services assistant secretary for children and families. ``These are
comprehensive, thoughtfully designed plans.''
The Nez Perce Social Service Department will operate the tribe's
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program and provide one-stop
assessment and job referral services.
About 135 families will be helped each month.

Under the new welfare reform law of 1996 signed by President Clinton,
tribes were given the opportunity to run their own programs with federal
funding.
