Tribe Pays Big Bucks For Stolen Drum
(Last updated 5:37 PM ET March 16)

EL PASO, Texas (Reuters) - The Tigua Indian tribe has paid a $1 million
reward to recover a sacred drum that disappeared during a tribal election
dispute in 1994, officials said Tuesday.
The drum is considered sacred because it was carried by the Tigua Pueblos
when they left New Mexico following a Pueblo revolt in 1680. They have lived
since then in southwestern Texas, and the drum is a central part of many
tribal ceremonies.

In 1994 Marty Silvas, a high-ranking reservation politician, lost his post
as war captain in an election and took the drum and other artifacts from the
Tigua reservation and hid them.

The tribe later offered a reward for the ceremonial artifacts.

Marc Schwartz, a lawyer representing the Tiguas, said an anonymous party
returned the drum and received the $1 million reward.

"The tribe is very happy," he said.

Peace and Love,
Michael
