Three hundred rebel delegates, many wearing the rebels' trademark ski masks, drove into Mexico City late Sunday in a caravan of buses from the southern state of Chiapas. The delegates are preparing for town meetings this weekend to discuss a proposed law that would guarantee rights for Mexico's 56 Indian groups. The meetings are being organized in 2,500 communities across Mexico. The rebels plan to hold a nationwide, non-binding referendum on indigenous rights March 21. In a move to draw attention to the proposal, a Zapatista contingent donned soccer gear and squared off Monday against a team of former professional players. The Zapatistas didn't fare well. The game announcer noted that their ski masks also may have given them the disadvantage. On Tuesday, the Zapatistas planned to attend a reception organized by city lawmakers representing the leftist Democratic Revolution Party, which governs the capital, and the Labor Party. The Zapatista National Liberation Army began a short-lived uprising in January 1994 in Chiapas to demand greater rights for Mexico's Indians.
