Allard issues ultimatum to EPA over wastes at Rocky Flats

By Berny Morson

U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard Tuesday demanded the Environmental Protection Agency
explain delays in issuing paperwork needed to begin shipping nuclear waste
from Rocky Flats to a burial site in New Mexico.

In a letter to EPA administrator Carol Browner, Allard said he wants an answer
a week from today.

If Browner doesn't meet that deadline, "We're going to have to step up the
pressure somehow," the Republican senator said.

"I'm not exactly sure how we might do that, but we have appropriations bills,
we have appointments coming through," he said. "We have other ways in which a
member of the Senate can put pressure on an agency."

Allard said in his letter that he set the deadline for a response because
other members of the Colorado congressional delegation have been seeking
answers from the EPA since October.

EPA officials did not immediately return phone calls.

Tim Rehder, the team leader for Rocky Flats issues at the EPA's Denver office,
said the plant passed an inspection required before shipments can begin. But
formal certification is pending in Washington.

Allard raised questions again after a report last week in the Denver Rocky
Mountain News that so much waste is piling up at the defunct nuclear weapons
plant that it will have to be stored in tents beginning this summer. The waste
was supposed to go to the burial site near Carlsbad, N.M.

"I was flabbergasted when I found out they were thinking about storing waste
there at Rocky Flats in tents when we've got a $2.1 billion facility in New
Mexico," Allard said. "To me, it just doesn't make any sense."
