Fifty-five of the 60 nurses in the area have threatened to quit by the end of March unless the province increases their pay and improves their working conditions. In a letter to Defence Minister Art Eggelton, Matthew Coon-Come said Quebec is not providing proper health care to the Cree, as promised in the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. "In the event of non-performance of Quebec of its duties under the treaty, the Cree call on the government of Canada by virtue of its fiduciary obligations to the Cree people, as an aboriginal people of Canada, to provide us with this fundamental service," Coon-Come said in the letter. Cree officials say the nurses, all of whom are non-native, are often on-call around the clock, seven days a week. The nurses are seeking an increase in pay of about 20 per cent, plus 25 per cent isolation pay, and better living conditions.
