Racist Mascot issue Subject of Conference in Los Angeles

On 13, 14 and 15th April at the California State University in Los Angeles,
the use of racist Mascots in Sports and other racist logos and packaging
will be the subject of a conference.

This conference, cosponsored by ASI, EOP, Student Affairs, the American
Indian Student Council and the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and
the Media is held at Cal State L.A.

Keynote speaker will be Charlene Teters, who has been fighting the use of
a racist mascot at Illinois University (Chief Illiniwek) for years. She was
the subject of a documentary of her fight to eliminate this mascot called
"In whose honor?"
She was horrified when a white man, dresed as an Indian entered the sports
arena and proceeded to do an "Indian" dance. She and her kids just wished
the ground would open, so they could disappear, that is how hurt and
embarrased they felt.
