Protest to resume against whale hunt

    by Ross Anderson
    Seattle Times staff reporter

The anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd will resume its protest against the
Makah Tribe's planned whale hunt this spring, but with one fewer vessel.

Paul Watson, founder of the group, said he will take the ship Sea
Shepherd to the North Atlantic, where Iceland plans to resume commercial
whaling. The Sirenian, a smaller boat, will return to Neah Bay at the first
sign the Makahs are about to hunt gray whales, he said.

Watson blamed Iceland's decision to resume whaling on the Makahs, who
want to resume whaling for cultural reasons. That created a precedent for
hunts in other traditional whaling cultures, from Iceland and Norway to
Japan, he said.

Sea Shepherd and various animal-rights groups clashed with tribal
members last fall during the southward whale migration, but the tribe never
attempted a hunt. The hunt may be attempted next month during the whales'
northward migration up the Pacific Coast.
