6th Year
Column of the Americas

Last month marked the beginning of the 6th year of our syndicated "Column of
the Americas." We were first picked up as Latino Spectrum by Chronicle
Features in San Francisco in 1994. Last year, Universal Press Syndicate bought
out CF and in the process, picked up our column. At any one time, we are
picked up by 30-40 newspapers nationwide and we appear on various national
electronic listservs.

To celebrate our 6th year, we picked up 5 new newspapers... and we thank our
readers because we know many of you have called or written to your local
newspapers.

If you would like to see our column in your local newspaper, please call or
write your local editor and tell them to both carry our column and to run it.
It does matter.

If anyone would like to write to our editor, feel free to write them and tell
them what you think of our column. He does enjoy reading letters about our
column.

Our editor's name is Greg Melvin. Hes a great editor and very supportive. No
doubt he will appreciate a few letters. Write him at: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Butcher of Acoma

In our recent column regarding the Juan de Oate controversy in New Mexico, we
had meant to give info regarding books that are useful in understanding the
first 100 years of Spanish occupation of the Southwest.

* Two Lives for Oate, Miguel Encinias, University of New Mexico Press (While
sympathetic to Onate, this historical novel does in fact detail the many
atrocities of his expedition).

* Explorers, Traders, and Slavers by Joseph P. Sanchez, University of Utah
Press

* Indian Uprising on the Rio Grande: The Pueblo Revolt of 1680, Franklin
Folsom, University of New Mexico Press
Despite protests by the native people of New Mexico, the Albuquerque city
council is still moving ahead with plans to erect a statue to the
conquistador.

The Pueblos of New Mexico have asked us to pass this message along. The city
council will again take up the issue on Monday April 5, 5 pm. Those wishing to
call and express concern regarding the proposed Oate statue, call the city

A little Research help

Heres a letter. Thought maybe someone could help. We dont have that info at
hand... Think the column was written in 1998 -- around the spring -- the
quotes we believe are from students from an elementary school in Fresno --
regarding Prop 227. If anyone has the exact citation, date, please contact the
letter writer. Thanks RR & PG

Dear Mrs. Gonzales and Mr. Rodriguez,

Help!
My wife is finishing up her thesis on measuring self esteem in Latino youth
for her MFCC/AT degree and was basing much of her introduction on a couple
quotes attributable to an article you wrote.

The problem now is that she has the wrong date and title reference and now
must consider not using the useful quotes...if you are able to help isolate
where to reference the following 2 quotes we would be most grateful... I
believe that these were reactions by children to a book you wrote if that is
any help...
---------
"Why is it that many Latinos don't make it to college? I mean Latinos are
smart enough to go to college. Or is it that just because they're
Mexicans, or because they think to low to go to college?"

and

"I loved it when you said that we could be anything when we grow up. I
believe that I will grow up and be a good man because I believe in myself.
And I really wanted somebody to say that we could be anything because I
didn't believe in myself because everybody tells me I can't do it."
---------
Time is of the essence here, the study is due by April 5. I will keep
reading all the articles I can find by you guys but I fear not finding it...
If you are able to help, then I thank you so very much.
Should you be unable to assist, well then...keep up the good writing!

Sincerely
Alex Pearson

20 Years of Celebrating Life

For my (RR) 20th anniversary of celebrating life, I wrote the 1st person
essay on the subject of surviving police brutality and also sent out a piece
on the power of forgiveness.

The response was overwhelming and hope to do a follow up on the subject soon.
Thank you very much for the messages.
